Giving and Receiving

Is it better to give or receive? No, I am not talking about THAT! Get your mind out of the gutter, once again! There is a theme to MissSupe's blog, notice it? Why do people feel the need to receive in order to give? This is not shocking, but selfish nonetheless. If you have read a previous post of mine, you will note that I depise selfish people, doesn't everybody? Here is a scenario that just irks me, a story that brings out the selfishness and stupidity of today's world. At work we have an annual bake sale where the profit goes to the United Way. Hypothetically, I am going to make cookies for this bake sale. I go to the grocery store, buy items, and ultimately spend, let's say $20. I spend two hours of my free time, baking, which I hate. So now, I am in the hole $20 and out of two hours. Great. My cookies are finally made, and I take them to work. These 20 cookies are sold at $1 per cookie. Does anyone see where I am going with this? So $20 goes to the United Way. Um-HELLO! Does anybody see this as stupid besides me? Why not just donate $20 to United Way and save myself two hours. I explained to one of my co-workers that this is recycling money and wasting time. His response was, "people don't want to donate unless they receive something in return." Are we that selfish? I was always taught it is better to give rather than receive.
